On June 13, 2018 the Forum filed comments on the CRTC proceeding for lower-cost data-only plans for mobile wireless. The Forum made a number of evidence-based conclusions:
- Price drives adoption, and thus high prices in Canada likely suppress demand for data
- Lack of competition has led to affordability problem for many mobile wireless users across Canada
- Carriers will go no further than minimum CRTC requirements
- More people in Canada are relying on higher volumes of mobile data, including vulnerable and marginalized communities which rely exclusively on mobile wireless services to remain connected
The Forum recommended that the CRTC require wireless service providers to make 1 gigabyte of data available for $7 per month, and 2 gigabytes of data for $10 per month (on LTE).
