The Forum filed a procedural request today asking the CRTC to add CBC’s Tandem initiative to the CRTC’s 2019-379 proceeding to renew CBC’s licences and to continue the exemption from regulation of CBC’s digital services. Tandem involves the dissemination of ‘brand messages’ in the news, entertainment and sports programming offered by CBC, ICI TÉLÉ, CBC’s discretionary television services (ARTV, EXPLORA, CBC News Network), CBC.ca, Radio-Canada.ca, CBC Gem, ICI TOU.TV, CBC Listen and Radio-Canada OHdio. CBC launched Tandem in mid-September 2020 and although it then said in early October 2020 that it was reviewing the initiative, websites linked to CBC/Radio Canada still describe Tandem and provide interested parties with a form to register for more information about what Tandem has to offer. The Forum is asking the CRTC to add the issue of CBC’s Tandem programming to the proceeding in light of the questions it raises, particularly with respect to the trust that CBC wants Canadians to have in its programming.
