Forum asks CRTC to launch public proceeding on future of public broadcasting in Canada

Canada’s Forum for Research and Policy in Communications today asked the CRTC to terminate the current renewal proceeding for the CBC and launch a much-needed public proceeding on the future of public broadcasting in Canada.

Canadians care deeply about the CBC: more than ten thousand individuals and organizations intervened in the most recent licence renewal process. But in the past 20 years, the CRTC has reviewed CBC’s performance just once, in 2013. Faced with a global pandemic and the uncertain world of digital streaming, this proposed policy review would give the CBC and other public broadcasters much-needed guidance concerning the CRTC’s expectations of the public element of Canadian broadcasting.
